IEEE-ICIT 2010 conference Chile – 2

Chile journey to visit the IEEE-ICIT 2010 confernce on Industrial Technology in Vina del Mar, Chile
9-26 March 2010

Through working in the FUNSET project we (Stephan Auer, Benjamin Grössing, Christian Hudec and Constantin Reinprecht) had the chance to present our work at an international conference in Vina del Mar, Chile in March 2010.

We all were a little bit nervous, because tomorrow we will present our paper “Implementation of Automation Agents for Batch Process Automation” in a poster session at the international conference. Again we practised what we could tell interested people and how to answer general questions about our work best.

We went to the conference at halb past 8 that day. The plenary speeches were quite interesting. In the adjacent coffee break we found a very interesting poster about a paper with the title ‘Enterprise Architecture Management in Virtual Organization’ and we had a small discussion with the author about his paper. I think that that paper will be a good reference for our diploma, because it deals with similar topics as the communication difficulties between different organizations. After the coffee break we went to the session about ‘System Integration, Industrial Informatics and Communications’ where Ingo Hegny from the Technical University of Vienna presented his paper.

After lunch break our time has come to present our paper in a Dialog Session. We worked hard in Vienna to create an informative poster and I think we did a good job. Unfortunately, we were unlucky with our place for the poster because it was in the back of the room. Nevertheless, some people from all over the world came to us and talked to us about our work and we explained to them what we have done and what will and has to be done in the future. I talked to two or three Germans, one Chinese guy from the USA and one Indian. They were really interested in our multi-agent-system architecture, the communication between the agents and between the agents’ high- and low-level, as well as the path finding algorithm. I really liked the international atmosphere of the conference and I also had a look at some other interesting posters and talked to people from all over the world. The thing which was not that good was that our session ‘Mechatronics and Robotics’ was not specialized on agent systems or ontologies and so the range of topics was very wide and a lot of them had absolutely nothing to do with our topic.

We again went to sit in some sessions and we heard some interesting presentations about several topics, presented from people from all over the world. Especially the RFID session  was quite interesting and some presentations were not too technical which helped me a lot to understand the basics of this topic.

In the morning we went to the conference to listen to the first plenary speech about Energy storages for renewable energy. In my opinion the speech was really interesting, but sometimes too technical for me and so I unfortunately did not understand the technical details the presenter mentioned. All of us went to the last session about Robotics and I think that session was one of the best ones because it was really interesting for me and very general so that you could follow very easily without detailed knowledge about this specific technical sector. After the end of the conference at about 6.40 pm we went to the beach to enjoy the sun.

Stories about our three day trip to the Easter Island will follow in the next article.
