IEEE-ICIT 2010 conference Chile – 1

Chile journey to visit the IEEE-ICIT 2010 confernce on Industrial Technology in Vina del Mar, Chile
9-26 March 2010

Through working in the FUNSET project we (Stephan Auer, Benjamin Grössing, Christian Hudec and Constantin Reinprecht) had the chance to present our work at an international conference in Vina del Mar, Chile in March 2010.

After 14 hours of flying, we finally arrived at Santiago de Chile airport. The first thing I noticed was the sun and the warm air. Finally summer! It took us about two hours to get through passport control and luggage x-ray check. We were scared that our tour guide Nico might not be waiting anymore but fortunately he was. In the afternoon we walked through Santiago to get to know the Chilean way of life. We visited some food markets which are called ‘la vega’. I really liked the broad variety of fruit, vegetables, fish and seafood.

We went hiking in the Andes to see the Morado glacier. It was awesome because it was quite warm outside (I think around 20 degrees) and you stand next to ice. After the cool hike we all went to hot thermal baths which are called baños colinas. It was awesome because we laid in the termal baths and watched the sunset.

We had traditional Chilean ‘corn pie’ for lunch which tasted quite good but a bit too sweet for me. The landscape on our way to the conference in Vina del Mar changed completely as we passed huge vineyards. I was very excited because my first international conference will start tomorrow and we will present our work in two days.

Stories about the conference and if our presentation went well will follow in the next articles.
