Amphibians in the Adjacencies of a Big Town

Study of Living Conditions and Habitats of Endangered Amphibians in the International Year of Biodiversity

As the UN declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity, our contribution was to focus on endangered amphibians. The students should be sensitized to ecological relations and as a result feel jointly responsible for their environment. With the help of scientists and graduate students as well as partners working in the field of environmental protection, the children were taught in their adjacencies as well as in universities.

The nine-year-olds had the opportunity to:

  • help with the rescue of toads
  • assess and improve by means of water samples the living conditions of amphibians in a pond located on the school grounds
  • contribute to the data collection and develop together with the scientific partners prognosis models as well as a questionnaire, which provided information on the public’s current state of knowledge on the biodiversity of amphibians.

The documentation on the awareness-raising was documented in the form of a report in the local newspaper and presentations were given to other classes.

This project has been completed.
